Today, it was so fun to learn about drawing~~
Using geography in teaching old children is a very effective way in teaching language. One of the methods is using the license plate. I recommend using the license plates to teach the old children. They are interesting to see the plates with different states’ names and it will help them learn the name and location of the state, also the numbers. (Combine a map)
Another method is using maps, World map or country maps. To describe the place where you born, where it is located, is there any rivers or mountains? , what is the famous food?, and etc. It’s not only help them in speaking something out, but also help them know more about the world and other culture.
Geography is a great discipline to introduce to kids. The suggestions you gave allow for a very rich experience for your students.
In the class, I was a little bit embarresed because I was lack of creative idea to make a story for srawing. At fist, I thought this kind of work was so easy, but when I tried to think about a stry to make a simple cartoon, it made me a little embarrased. I'm very thankful for your various ideas and ways to teach young learners. These activities give me so many motivations.
In Korea, on my speaking and writing class, I used passport for the class, At that time, the topics were travel, ariport and going abroad. Students could learn authentic vocabulary about going abroad and traveling.
In listening class, I used annimation like Disney annimation. Students really knew the story so well, so it was so easy for them to understand without trasnlation. They could accept and feel the story naturally and have long-term memorizing. Eventhough the story was a little bit long, they were so touched and interested in the story.
I would corporate touching nature in my class. Nature is a valuable thing to adapt teaching English for young children. The reason is as follows.
First of all, we could get plenty of materials easily from nature; wood, sand, pebble, leaf, clay, etc. Teacher doesn’t have to waste time to prepare for the materials.
Second of all, children love nature. Then we can get their attention easily. If I teach English with sand, they might touch and talk about feeling of sand. Adding water to the sand is much fascinating thing to them. It could be an art class as well. I may ask them how it feels. Then they would say cold, soft or dirty. It could be a way of teaching adjective hands down. With real material from nature, we can make super copious activities and interaction without losing their attention.
Last of all, the children in the city of Korea, everyday they see buildings, cars, and busy people. They are exposed desolate and dreary world. Though the class couldn’t go fieldtrip, I could show them pictures, videos, and books about our nature including rivers, mountains and trees. ’
Present that we received from the nature could be another present being to teach English for the lovely children.
Using culture in language class offers a lot of activities. Culture can involve food, history, weather, clothes and so on. If the class is combined with students who are from different countries, the effect of applying culture in language class can be doubled.
For example, they can introduce their traditional clothes to other students. They can compare each clothes and find similar or different things.
When they use culture in class, teachers should teach cultural relativity. Every culture has their own value. There is no better or worse culture.
I think that we can incorporate music into English class. Especially, songs are good way for using in language classroom, because students will learn pronunciation very naturally and unconsciously. Above all, in many cases, students will attract its melody and they must have curiosity toward the words in music. I think that it motivates them to learn effectively.
In my case, I learned Carpenters’ songs in music class at high school. I was really impressed by its beautiful melody and clear words. Also these songs motivated and helped me to learn some English grammar points. In other words, I succeeded in both memorizing words in songs and learning grammar at the same time.
Therefore, I believe that music is one of the best tools to initiate learning language naturally and smoothly, and it is worth incorporating into English class.
I think reminding ourselves how creative and surprising children can be is very important.
Drawing is the part that adults usually fail at.
On the contrary, children are really good at drawing.
As teachers, we can learn a lot of details about children' ability and mind from their drawings.
So it's best to incorporate drawing into teaching young learners.
From this class, I really learned that English teaching is not just about a language teaching.
There are a lot more to learn.
For example, the culture and thinking pattern of English-speaking countries are sometimes more important to learn. The communication between people is not just about words. On the other hand, the genuine communication is based on the understanding of nature. And the highest level of language learning is being able to incorporate the culture of the target language into one's own culture.
Teaching with alternative materials instead of textbook

When I was in my schooldays, my teachers' only tool for teaching was cassette player. While I was teaching in Korea, I also used only CD player. However, after taking TEFL class, I determined to use more useful, and motivating materials for improving listening skill. I think that there are two kinds of materials depending on ages: first, for younger children and second, for older children.

For younger children, I am going to use TV programs such as "between the lions" ,"sesame street" ,or "Dora", etc. Those kinds of program use standard English, and a curriculum is so systematic , therefore, yc are likely to be motivated easily with TV shows. They have some specific characters ,so yc want to imitate their favorite characters. In addition. we can use it with small cost of money. One thing I concern is never abuse during the class.Less than 5 minutes is appropriate time for yc.After watching TV program, drilling phonics, words and phrases will have to be necessary for the yc.

For older children, TV drama series is very efficient way for teaching integrated language skills. As for me , I used to watch TV series"Gossip Girl" in Korea. I could get to know personal expressions , social and cultural values from it. We could use it for various uses. We may use the scripts for dictations, analyze vocabularies by synonyms, make themselves familiar with real life expressions, and make the learners write for the role play scripts.

Using various materials will draw the interest or enjoyment from both yc and oc.If we can , enterprising spirit could be the key to teach English successfully.

The arts and crafts are the one of the good activity to use in language class for children. For example, students can do to make a birthday crown, to draw their face and make a mask, and to make a toy mobile. They can develop their physical movement skills like coloring, folding papers, cutting paper, and so on.
When they follow the teacher's instructions to work it in English, they can get rich comprehensible input in the class. They can understand some sentences and words making things, communicate with classmates as well. They can also display their work and then present their work in front of class in English.
Additionally, making a book is also excellent activity we can use in our class. Elementary school teachers in Korea are made full use of making a book activity not only in English class but also in other school subjects. This is a good for children to review or summarize the chapters and topics and put some knowledge in order - for instance, a sequence of frog's life, or my growth album from birth to now in science class. We can utilize it fully in our English class like making a playground stepbook, making family album, making a clothes flipbook to change clothes and so on.
I would like to apply family tree into the young children‘s classroom. Since family members are very important to young children which including most of the persons who they familiar to. According to the theory of Pieget choose familiar topic for young children helps decline the anxiety of learning effectively for young children.
I may ask young children students draw the pictures of their family members and describe the relationships between them or tell stories among them. It is a good way to teach them many skills of language such like pronunciation, grammar or listen and speaking skills. Drawing is a good idea which young children just like it! As what I did in my house, I always prepare plenty of paper for my son where he can touch in order to let him draw some pictures whatever he want. It’s always gives us surprise!
Actually I like the art for teaching young learner. As we learned from this lecture, there are lots of opportunities to develop and encourage young learner for language through using the art. Especially, I like to say we have to use the color for teaching young learner English in the class. Even though people look like they can not distinguish any difference between using color in teaching language and non-using color, there is a big difference between them. Some people say the color is a non-verbal language. The color is related with developing young learner's emotion. For example, parent usually consider the color for their boys and girls. They use green color for their children's room to give kids comfortable and stable feeling and atmosphere. Children can get good emotion when they are under this specific green color or blue color. I think this good parent's behavior affect their children's experience. The color is easily ignored when people teach young learner a language. And there is also specific ages for each colors. Teachers should know about this terms of colors for teaching young learner.( I can't forget the books of Eric carle. Amazing books!)
I think to make learning in class more interesting is to use physical movement, especially a student, who belongs to kinesthetic by multiple intelligences. The reason why I think that is because it is easy for them to remember what they did in class. For example, it might take more time but have students make a drama for a short conversation. The conversation might be about their father and mother, thus, let students create the action with this topic. By moving physically, they will enjoy learning and smoothly remember the words. In addition, making a drama is also to make a scenario so it will enhance students’ imagination.
I think using advertisement is a good way to teach Englsh. There are different kinds of advertisement though, especially TV commercial could be a good material to teach English to children. Because TV commercials are short, typically lasting 30 to 50 seconds, and have a interesting jingle and features. In addition, TV commercials contain authentic content written for native speakers and spoken in authentic English. Teachers can use jingle song or advertisement message itself as a tool to teach certain expression or vocabulary. I think using advertisement could be a good way to even learn basic grammar rule such as comparative ,superlative. If teacher use a famous and familiar brand ad. with children such as Coca-Cola, Snickers and McDonalds, it would be easy to gain student's attention. Another way to use advertisement is to make students creat slogans or storyboards for a certain brand.
Advertisement and Pictures Activity
Kyungken Lee

I would like to try an interesting activity using advertisement in magazines, newspapers, and Google images. If we allocate them methodically so that they can produce a whole story, we could get a good writing and speaking activity. For example, suppose a new-married couple wants to buy a family car and TV. Advertisement related to car sale is very various depending on car companies. Show students different advertisement of two different car companies (e.g., Toyota and Hyundai). It is natural that some people appear in the pictures. With some letters erased, have students imagine what they try to say. The words of Toyoda’s salesman could be different that those of Hyundai. Students may make up the utterances of them humorously, intriguingly, or originatively. What is next? This time is TV. How about a computer or camera? During the procedure, we can embed Google images to develop more storied. What about leading the series of pictures and advertisement to invent a whole interesting story? I think it is worthwhile to try it.

Focus: Induce them to write down the possible words that people of the picture talk.
And then have the students discuss in pair, later in class.

I believe bodily & kinesthetic intelligence play a major part in language acquisition for children; therefore, dance and architecture are two subjects that can be used in English learning. Dance often associates with music and children love to move around when they hear beats – adults often act the same way. By having children move around they are able learn their body part well. More over, for kids that are more advance they can use their body movement to act and dance out a situation or sentences they hear. When I thought of architecture in the classroom, LEGO cross my mind. I remember when I used to play LEGO when I was little adults always asked me if I would like to be an architect. Also, architecture involves drawing sketch. I am not talking about complicated drawing or building a rocket, but children are creative and the teachers should design the classroom to be a place where children can benefit and enhance their intelligence while learning English.
Frankly speaking, this is my first time to get some instruction of drawing. It was fantastic. I used to load, put or show some pictures whenever I needed them for my class. Now that I can draw simple pictures easily, I don't have to waste my time searching some pictures on the web and in the books. Moreover, it seems more helpful for me to say more sentences while I'm drawing. Students can hear my explanation as well as see my picture. I'd like to strongly suggest to provide more time for teaching teachers how to draw pictures for some reason. First, teaching low level students, teachers can teach some vocabulary like action verbs with drawing. Second, teachers can make students draw some pictures of the story about what they are listening to. Third, studens with artistic intelligence can enjoy English classes much more than before. Therefore, the ability to draw something quickly is an essential skill for English teachers for young learners.
Cartoon, pictures, or story telling and play...we can apply them to our class for children. Children has limitless enthusiasm and imagination. So, I'm thinking of playing house or playing hospital for my class with yC. They enjoy that sort of playing with friends and their topics can vary. YC imitate parents' talk and they will talk about food, parties, clothes, and workplaces. They can practice situational conversation as they were a doctor, a nurse, a parent or anything they want to be. Just bring them some toys that can be used for the playing. They will try to produce the right communication without pressure. Teacher can just monitor or join them involving a role.
Drawing is really good way to teach yC. It could make them not have a burden to study. It sometimes make me get stress, though. Incorporating with art or other subject make them have opportunities to experience in other field using English. I was thinking about combining with my major which is literature. Language is a correation with literature. Literature makes teachers have a bunch of materials from begining level to advanced. That is, they have many choices to teach yC. When the teachers want to use literature for students, they should think of students' level. If the materials are not suitable for them, it could make them feel frustrated. I think that literature has a variety of stories to get students' attentions.
Using pictures in teaching is a great, innovative, and creative way to teach both Young and Older children. I always believe that pictures are teachers' friends. Telling a story to student is helpful, and drawing something out for students to use their imagination is even better because we actually can get students to engage and produce the language. It can switch students from the passive mode of studying into an active mode of studying. For younger students, pictures can help them use their imagination into learning. For Older Children, using a picture can help them learn more vocabularies.

The only thing that can be a draw back from using drawing picture is that I am not confident regarding my drawing skills!

We picture in our mind when we listen a story. It is a good way to remember a story. For young childeren, using drawing is great in learning language. They love drawing and are very visual. For teachers of young children, using picture to teach abstrack vocabularies is easier than explaining by oral lecture. In addition, young students think and imagine a lot while they are drawing. What they will draw and what color they will paint. They can concentrate on thier drawing for a while. Also, drawing looks like a play to them. For me,even as an adult, I really like doodling so I think drawing is very fun for kids.
