Perhaps for beginning levels, but using the first language to teach a target language may not be as effective in the long run for the students.

As to starting out with GTM at the beginning?

It doesn't have the 'Hook' power you need to get things focused. I am not saying don't use GTM, but I would modify your statement in your second paragraph to:

GTM works best when grammar explanation is NEEDED. Whether at the beginning, middle or end of a lesson.
